People are often not aware of
the enormous diversity of our heritage, but each species of
plant and animal in an area is as much part of this heritage as any
man-made monument left behind by the ebb and flow of history. In addition,
in the past, popular tradition, traditional crafts and
industry gave each area its specific character, influenced its architecture,
and helped determine the way in which the natural milieu was exploited,
thus shaping the landscape.
The heritage of an area is not just a few symbolic species or monuments.
Our heritage is all-embracing, a heritage in which nature, culture
and history are inextricably linked. It is an essential part
of our very being and, in part, belongs to all of us! We need to be
very much aware of the importance of preserving this heritage
when planning our future development. We all need to do all in our
power, each in our own way and inasmuch as we are in a position to
do so, to ensure that our decisions lead to a form of sustainable
development.
